Summary of activity
Developing a training for settlement officers on health-related issues specific to francophone newcomers to Saskatchewan. This training covers the stress that service delivery staff may experience while in contact with certain vulnerable populations that may affect their ability to provide the appropriate guidance.
Desired outcomes
The collective mental health of settlement officers improves while allowing them to provide quality service to newcomers.
Developments to date
- Implementation of sessions to share information about health-related issues with people who work with newcomers. These sessions take place six to eight times per year on the initiative of the RSFS.
- One Q&A session on vaccination against COVID-19 for newcomers and welcome workers
- Two information sessions on preserving food
- Mental Health First Aid training
- Training on compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, including a handbook of strategies for optimizing stress management among people who work with individuals who have been traumatized, which is common among newcomers.
