Holding trainings based on the identified training needs of settlement professionals in the areas of mental health and trauma

Summary of activity
A training dealing with mental health–related issues affecting francophone newcomers to Yukon and geared toward settlement officers is to be held. This training deals with the stress that settlement staff may experience when working with vulnerable populations that may affect their ability to provide appropriate guidance. The experience of settlement professionals will be used to evaluate the project in order to plan future trainings.
Desired outcomes
The training needs of settlement professionals in matters of newcomer mental health are met.
Developments to date
- One MHFA training offered to RIFY members to give them the tools to better detect signs of psychological distress in newcomers, and to gain familiarity with first-aid techniques and the French-language resources available in Yukon
- One reference sheet on French-language mental health services in Yukon updated by the PCS and distributed to participants
- One training entitled Pour des milieux de soins/travail prenant en compte les traumatismes for partners (RIFY members) and communities.
- Three trainings offered to RIFY members on the following topics:
- One training on Naloxone and the opioid crisis in Yukon (in person) offered to the two trained RIFY members responsible for welcoming immigrants
- One training on de-escalating potentially dangerous situations offered to the two trained RIFY members responsible for welcoming immigrants
- One training on suicide prevention offered to the two trained RIFY members responsible for welcoming immigrants
