Study on the role of professional bodies in integrating newcomers, leading to a pilot project on nursing.
Component 2
Gathering knowledge on the needs of francophone immigrants and the challenges they experience.
Date
2021-2025
Summary of activity
The study will make it possible to identify the regions where recruitment happens and thus better prepare for newcomers’ full integration into economic and social life before they even arrive. This is essentially done by identifying potential obstacles faced by newcomers when it comes to finding employment. Identifying obstacles will allow for the creation of a pilot project to upgrade nursing care in line with the requirements of professional bodies. Once the pilot project has been evaluated, a full-fledged, replicable program will be created. A final evaluation will also take place in the last year of the project.
Desired outcomes
A program to upgrade nursing care is implemented on Prince Edward Island. This program may be replicated in other communities.
Developments to date
- A case study documenting the barriers faced by aspiring nurses who are francophone or bilingual newcomers to PEI and the language requirements set by nursing colleges in the different provinces of Canada.
- Interviews with registered nurses to help identify challenges in recruiting francophone healthcare professionals.
- A table comparing practice requirements in Canada with those in France.
